History Of Video Poker

Video Poker The gambling industry comprises of numerous games, of which, one of them is video poker. Video poker is a relatively new casino game that is a combination of the slot machine and the poker game.

Video Poker is not just a game of pure luck. Skill can determine a winner, therefore video poker is a very popular game with many gamblers that like to think.

The history of poker dates back to the 1820's where a version of poker was played in New Orleans, and on riverboats that sailed from the city. At that time, a 20 card deck was used. It wasn't until the 1860's that the flush, straight, and 52 card deck were in use and the game was played the same way as today.

The slot machine was invented in the 1800's and the two games were merged into a single machine in the late 19th century. These poker machines became popular in San Francisco in 1890. They were quite similar to today's standards but real cards were used instead of images on a video screen. Though poker machines were popular in the beginning, popularity declined in the early part of the 1900's. The decline was attributed to economic difficulties and the limited technology of machines.

These factors lead to loss of interest in playing. In response to this decline in popularity, a primitive form of machine was released in 1964, only to receive moderate success. It was only in the mid 1970s that the video poker machine of today became available. With the advances in technology, a central processing unit was installed in the machine so that there was a 'brain' attached to a video monitor that transmitted action to the player.

This was the period when casino operators were looking for a high profit game. And this was when the idea of a combination of the slot machine and the traditional game of the five card draw was thought of. Bally Manufacturing was responsible for the manufacture of the first video poker machine in the year 1976. This first machine was not colored, but black and white.

A color version of the machine was to follow after eight months. This machine was released by the Fortune Coin Company. Once video poker machines were manufactured, the casino world found that computer chips became easier to produce in large amounts. Seeing this demand in video poker, more and more casinos started introducing video poker machines, once they knew the machines were financially viable.

In a bid to provide some competition to the video poker machine, a different version of the game was released in the year 1979 by a company called IGT. This machine received nothing but unheralded success and it was soon after (in the 1980s) that video poker really took off. This is when the game became popular in casinos all across Las Vegas.

The main reason of the rise in popularity and the acceptance of the game lies in the fact that players found it better and more comfortable in front of machines than other players. They found it less intimidating to play in front of a machine, than other players. With this, the popularity of the game has increased in the last quarter century to become one of the most sought casino game not only in casinos around the world, but also in bars and online.

Video poker is based on a form of poker called five card draw. Usually five card draw is a game where you are playing other live opponents, but in video poker, you are playing against a machine. Rather than having to beat another players hand, you have to have a hand better than a certain minimum value.

The minimum value of the hand required to win depends on the game you are playing. For example in the video poker game called jacks or better, the player must get a pair of jacks or higher to earn money. If the player doesn't get a hand equal to or higher than a pair of jacks, the machine takes the wager. If the player gets a pair of jacks or higher, they win. The payoff is based on the amount wagered and the value of the hand (the better the hand, the larger the payoff).

The online casino that you play at also makes a difference in how much money you can make. There are some casinos that pay more for a hand than others. One casino might pay 6 coins for every coin bet if the player got a straight, while another casino might pay 5 coins for the same hand. This makes it important to check several casinos and compare the payoffs before you play any type of video poker online for real money.
