Harmala Alkaloids
Information About Harmala Alkaloids
Harmala alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring compounds that are often utilized in the hallucinogenic drink known as ayahuasca. Fairly large concentrations of harmala alkaloids like harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine are found in the plant Peganum harmala, and to a lesser extent Banisteriopsis caapi.
Although the alkaloids have a psychoactive effect when taken by themselves, many people report that the results from ingesting most types of harmala alkaloids is not very pleasant. Intoxication is accompanied by visual disturbances and bodily numbness. At higher doses there may be some amount of dizziness and nausea.
Ayahuasca is a drink usually produced by boiling two different kinds of plant material in water. In most cases, one of the plants contains DMT and the other contains MAOI's in the form of harmala alkaloids. Besides being psychoactive on their own, harmala alkaloids reduce the breakdown of DMT in the digestive system.
This allows DMT to enter the bloodstream where it eventually reaches the brain. Normally DMT must be smoked or injected in order to be absorbed by the human body. If plants that contain DMT are consumed orally without an MAOI, they are broken down in the digestive system before they can reach the brain.
MAOI's: Also known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors are a type of chemical that can stimulate the central nervous system (CNS) by inhibiting the metabolism of monoamines. They have been used as a treatment for depression in the past but because of negative reactions (sometimes fatal) with foods and other medicines, they are seldom used as anti-depressants today.
Harmala alkaloids are indole alkaloids known as beta-carbolines. Harman, harmine, harmaline, pinoline, tetrahydroharmine, and tryptoline are examples of beta-carboline based drugs. The structure of beta-carboline is similar to that of tryptamine. DMT, ibogaine, LSD, psilocybin, and yohimbine are examples of tryptamine based drugs.
A combination of harmala alkaloids and a tryptamine (like LSD or magic mushrooms that contain psilocybin) is sometimes used by people looking for a deeper experience than either compound would produce on its own, see this.
Harmala alkaloids include: harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine, harman, harmine acid, harmilinic acid, harmanamide, acethylnorharnine.
Harmine is the one harmala alkaloid that most people like. When taken orally in its pure form, effects tend to be stimulating at low doses and more calming at higher doses.
Harmaline is not a chemical many people choose to repeat when taken in its pure form. Numbness, visual disturbances, and cloudy thinking are common.
Tetrahydroharmine is not a chemical many people choose to repeat when taken in its pure form. Tetrahydroharmine is less effective as an MAOI than either harmine or harmaline, but it is a relatively potent serotonin uptake inhibitor.
