3 Part Nutrients And Hydroponic Marijuana

A 1 part hydroponic nutrient is a product that is supplied with primary, secondary, and trace nutrients in the same container. When growing hydroponic marijuana was first attempted on my part, two packages of 1 part nutrients (dry powder) were purchased.

One package was for seedlings/vegetative stages and included all primary, secondary, trace nutrients (in the same package). The other package was for flowering and contained all primary, secondary, trace nutrients (in the same package).

Because of the choice of a 1 part nutrient, problems were a part of every crop. Roots would turn from white (healthy) to yellow/brown (unhealthy) in color, especially during the flowering period. Leaves would discolor then they would dry up and fall off the plant.

These signs were recognized as nutrient related problems, but there seemed to be no reason why. The proper amount of nutrients were supplied, the nutrient/water mixture in the reservoir was changed often enough, and other things related to growing (like temperature and pH) were in the optimal range.

The reason for the problem wasn't understood but a change in nutrients was the best option for resolving things. A 3 part nutrient called vita grow dry was attempted, with dramatic results. Roots stayed white all the way to harvest time and leaves didn't fall off the plants.

After the problem was solved, a reason was sought as to why it happened in the first place. After doing some research, it turns out that 1 part nutrient products (liquid or dry) with primary, secondary, trace nutrients mixed together in the same package will react to each other when stored together over extended periods of time.

Nutrients that are all stored together will become ineffective after a period of months, and cause plants to experience a problem known as nutrient lockout. If you are for some reason forced to use a 1 part nutrient (liquid or dry) only get enough to last a few months.

Experience With Vita Grow

Vita grow is a 3 part nutrient. It is available in dry powder and liquid form. Because it is supplied in individual containers, it can be stored for a year or longer and remain effective (as long as each part is stored separately and not mixed together until they are in the reservoir).

Personal experience described below is based on working with vita grow dry powder. It can be employed for both hydroponic and soil growing. 1 pound (dry powder) of each part will last at least a year (probably 2 years) if you are growing for personal use. Total cost for a pound of each is under $50.

Do not mix 2 or more parts together, then add them to the reservoir. When mixing these nutrients, add each part to a cup individually and add water. Then stir for about a minute. After you are sure all the nutrient has dissolved into the water, you can add it to the reservoir. Repeat the process for each part you are adding.

Part A (SuperMicro Dry 4-14-24) contains 4% N, 14% P, and 24% K as well as the secondary nutrients sulphur and magnesium. It also includes the trace elements boron, chlorine, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc.

Part B (FastGrow Dry 17-0-0) contains 17% N as well as the secondary nutrient calcium. Part C (GiantBloom Dry 0-51-34) contains 51% P and 34% K. By adjusting the amount of each part, you can optimize the proportions your plants get during different stages of plant life.

There is also an alternate Part B (SuperGrow Dry 15-0-0) designed for light sources under 400 watts, available only as part of Combination Dry 9-7-12 (Combination Dry also contains an equal amount of Part A). SuperGrow Dry 15-0-0 is mostly comprised of nitrate nitrogen.

The plant takes more time to digest the nitrate nitrogen at low light levels. This keeps stem cell growth paced with the accumulation of micro-nutrients and calcium so plants stay shorter than they would with regular nitrogen. Otherwise, plant stretching with spindly weak stems occur.

Do not use SuperGrow Dry (15-0-0) with lights systems that are 400 watts or higher. If you do, plant growth will be slower and the harvest will be smaller than it could be.

When using SuperGrow Dry (15-0-0) during the seedling/veg stage because the lighting source is less than 400 watts, switch to the regular Part B (FastGrow Dry 17-0-0) when the plants are flowered, if the light source will be 400 watts or higher.

Grow Great Marijuana:
An Uncomplicated Guide to
Growing the World's Finest Cannabis

If you find instructions and books about growing hydroponic marijuana overly technical and hard to follow, this book is a very good choice for simple and accurate instructions. It does not cover advanced techniques so if you already know how to grow, this book would be of little value. But if you are a first time grower with no experience, this is the first book to look at.

It will explain the steps involved from start to finish (with text and images). Includes information on where to grow, type of hydroponic system to use, selecting a seed strain, lighting, fans, nutrients, security, clones, vegetative growth, flowering, harvesting, stress, pests, and more. Recommended for beginners only, this will show you everything you need to raise a hydroponic marijuana crop.
