Phen-Fen
Phen-Fen Information
Phentermine and fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) taken together has helped those who are obese to effectively lose weight. The two drugs have been on the market separately since the 1970's, but never were used as a combination drug until the early 90's.
Phentermine decreases appetite while fenfluramine gives the feeling of increased satiety (the quality or state of being fed or gratified to or beyond capacity). The two drugs are anorectic drugs which permits reducing the dose of both agents and reduces adverse side effects.
These two drugs have been widely publicized since the approval, by the Food and Drug Administration, of Phen-Fen. However, human studies have demonstrated toxic effects of fenfluramine and evidence has linked the drug to primary pulmonary hypertension.
As evidence was linked from one study to another, the company who produced the drug voluntarily pulled the drug off the market. After being pulled off the market the company has established a panel of experts to investigate the drug.
Also, a flock of legal experts are in on the action and have represented patients who suffered ill effects from this drug. There have been many court battles to sue people involved with the company who produced Phen-Fen to the doctors who dispensed it. Some of these court cases have ended in settlements totaling millions of dollars.
